Get ready for winter!
Like it or not, this week reminded us that winter is approaching. Our public works staff is finishing fall tasks and preparing equipment for the snow season. Are you prepared? Consider taking the following steps to get ready for winter.
-
Get notified: Sign up to receive notifications of snow emergency and other weather-related events. Notifications can be sent via email and/or text.
-
Prepare your vehicle: Get your ice scraper, shovel and emergency supplies ready and into your vehicle before the snow arrives. Check your tire tread and air-levels. Top off your antifreeze and test out your battery.
-
Make a parking plan: When snow accumulation reaches, or is presumed to reach, 4 inches or more, the city of Richfield may declare a Snow Emergency in effect. During a Snow Emergency, all on-street parking is prohibited. If you rely on on-street parking, begin talking to neighbors, employers or local churches about finding an off-street parking space for your vehicle. Richfield has one Snow Emergency Parking Refuge, located on Cedar Avenue with 392 available spaces.
Richfield's dedicated plowing crews cover 130 miles of streets, 10 miles of alleys and 50 miles of sidewalks. Our staff work tirelessly to remove snow and manage icy conditions on our paved surfaces. They strive to provide these services in a timely, safe and cost-effective manner while keeping in mind concerns around safety, budget, personnel, equipment and the environment.

What to do with those pumpkins?
As you clean up from Halloween, consider composting your pumpkins. Pumpkins (carved or not) can go straight into your curbside organics cart or be brought to one of the drop-off organics sites at Wood Lake Nature Center or House of Prayer Church. Remove any decorations (i.e., glitter, rhinestones, paint, lights, candles, etc.) before composting. If you would like to bag your pumpkin, use a brown paper bag. BPI-certified compostable plastic bags are not recommended as they will tear. Pumpkin seeds and "guts” should be placed in a BPI-certified compostable bag and not thrown loosely into the organics cart.

Fall leaves are beautiful, but they can hurt water quality
This fall, Richfield residents were mailed a postcard with information on how fall lawncare can impact water quality.
When leaves fall onto paved surfaces and get washed down the storm drain, it can send phosphorus straight to our lakes and ponds. Check out the postcard for things you can do to keep our waters clean when taking care of your leaves!
