Tips for dealing with troublesome toms
Turkey hazing has again become problematic in parts of Richfield. Our Public Safety department is limited in how they can respond. According to the Minnesota DNR, residents who encounter aggressive turkeys must establish their dominance by "hazing" the turkey. Consider these tips, from both the DNR and our local experts at Wood Lake Nature Center:
- Stand your ground. It is important that you establish your dominance.
- Make yourself large, make loud noises (yell or use a whistle or airhorn) or throw a stick or tennis ball at the bird.
- If other methods don't deter the bird, don’t hesitate to use a stick to defend yourself. They are tough, powerful birds.
- Using animal scent from a known predator (fox, coyote) may also deter turkeys from lingering on your property.
If you're nervous, consider bringing a walking stick, umbrella or cane with you on walks or in areas where turkeys are known to be aggressive.
If a specific bird is becoming increasingly problematic, contact the Richfield Police Department's non-emergency line at: 612-861-9898.
