Turkeys have been rampant in Richfield for years, and although they can be impressive when displaying their prowess, they aren’t the kindest of birds. Recently, Richfield’s aggressive turkeys caused a stir, even making the evening news last week. According to naturalists at Wood Lake Nature Center, the turkeys are getting habituated to humans, leading to more challenging encounters.
Consider these tips, from both the Humane Society of the United States and our local experts at Wood Lake Nature Center:
- Never feed a wild turkey and avoid giving them access to a food source (bird feeders, pet food, etc).
- When encountering wild turkeys, the best thing to do is avoid them. Give them a wide berth when you encounter them
- Wild turkeys have a “pecking order” of dominance and may view people or pets as underlings, chasing them or blocking the entrance to homes or cars
- When threatened or aggressive, turkeys may try to jump and fight you with their leg spurs, which can be sharp and cut through clothing and skin.
- If confronted by an aggressive turkey, consider the following options:
- Stand your ground. It is important that you establish your dominance.
- Make yourself large, make loud noises (yell or blow a loud whistle) or throw a stick or tennis ball at the bird.
- If other methods don't deter the bird, don’t hesitate to use a stick to defend yourself. They are tough, powerful birds.
- From spring through summer don’t wear blue and red clothing around male (tom) turkeys as these colors represent challengers to males for dominance.
- If you're nervous, consider bringing a walking stick, umbrella or cane with you on walks or in areas where turkeys are known to be agressive.
- If a specific bird is becoming increasingly problematic, contact the Richfield Police Department's non-emergency line at: 612-861-9898.
