Richfield Debuts Strategic Planning Dashboard
Beginning this week, residents will have an inside look on how city policymakers and staff are striving to make change. Building on the work of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan that was approved last fall, an interactive Strategic Planning Dashboard is now available to help explain and track the city’s five strategic priorities.
“The strategic plan laid out a roadmap for us, in terms of where we are heading,” explained councilmember, Ben Whalen. “This dashboard adds the little "you are here" star so we know if we're making progress towards those goals identified as part of the plan.”
Those goals, or strategic priorities, identified during the strategic planning process include: Operational Excellence, Community Development, Sustainable Infrastructure, High Quality Workforce and Equity and Inclusion.

Input needed for Active Transportation Plan!
The City is developing a plan to expand safe and convenient walking, biking and rolling options in the city. We are working to develop a vision for an active transportation system that provides quiet, low-stress, enjoyable routes for people to get to and from their homes, shops, schools, work, transit and parks. The Plan will identify short and long-term opportunities to advance these projects in the city.
We need your help identifying specific locations where walking, biking and rolling could feel safer and more comfortable for you and your family.

Community Garden pilot program lottery now open!
Sign up for a chance to participate in the Community Garden pilot program at Veterans Park! Garden plots will be available from early May to mid-October. Preference will be given to those living in high-density housing without current access to gardening space. A few accessible, raised-table garden beds will also be available. Plot rental is $45 for the 2023 season.
Due to limited space, only Richfield residents are allowed to apply. Participants will be chosen by random drawing. By registering for the program, you will be entered into the lottery for consideration as a renter of a garden plot.

Reminder: during a thaw/freeze cycle, salt smart!
Frequent freezing and thawing make for icy roads and sidewalks. In these conditions, remember to use smart salting practices that balance winter safety with preventing pollution of our water resources.
SHOVEL: Clear walkways before snow gets compacted or turns to ice, and salt only if needed.
SCATTER: More salt does not mean more melting. Aim for 3 inches of space between salt granules.
SWITCH: Common deicers don’t melt ice below 15° F (pavement temperature), so should not be applied. Instead, use a small amount of sand for traction when it is too cold.
SWEEP: Clean up leftover salt and sand on dry pavement, so it doesn’t wash into our waterways. Reuse it as needed.

In case you missed it....
Amy Markle, Recreation Services Director, traveled to St. Paul on Tuesday to testify at the State Capital. Markle was there to represent Richfield’s request to ask voters to consider a Local Sales Tax to help fund large-scale improvements at Wood Lake Nature Center, the Community Center and Veterans Park. The construction of a new Wood Lake Nature Center is one of the city’s top legislative priorities, and has already received local and federal support.
