The sweetest time of year!
Sap is flowing in the Silver Maple trees at Wood Lake Nature Center, which means spring is just around the corner. School groups, volunteers, and staff are working hard to tap the maple trees, collect the sap and fire up the evaporator for hours at a time. To produce one gallon of syrup, 40 gallons of sap of sap must be collected and processed.
We give thanks for the knowledge passed down from the Indigenous peoples living in northeastern North America who first produced maple syrup and maple sugar. Minnesota is one of a few states which has the perfect climate for maple sugaring.
To learn more about this magical process and how to identify if you have a maple tree in your own back yard, watch this tutorial on making your own maple syrup. Maple syrup kits are available for purchase of $10 at Wood Lake Nature Center (6710 Lake Shore Drive), and include a sap bag, holder, spile, and instruction sheets on how to cook 100% real maple syrup!
