The Richfield Recap - Feb 23, 2023 |
|
Snow Emergency, Day 2
As Richfield begins to emerge from the extreme weather of the past two days, the city offers its thanks to residents for clearing the streets and looking out for their neighbors. The Snow Emergency will continue until 5 p.m. on Friday, February 24 to ensure Public Works crews have time to clean up the after-effects of the snowstorm.
Municipal Building Closures - February 23
The city of Richfield is closed for in-person service today, February 23. The following buildings will be closed to in-person service:
- Municipal Center (6700 Portland Avenue)
- Community Center (7000 Nicollet Avenue)
- Wood Lake Nature Center building only (6710 Lake Shore Drive)
- Ice Arena (636 East 66th Street)
The four Richfield municipal liquor stores plan to open at 12 p.m. on Thursday, February 23.
Office staff will be working remotely and available via phone or email. Our fire, police, public works and water plant crews will be fully staffed and working around the clock to ensure our community remains safe and accessible.
Trash/Recycling/Organics collection delays
By now, all affected residents should have received a call regarding pickup for the rest of the week.
Residents who are serviced by ANY hauler on Thursdays or Fridays will be delayed one day (Thursday -> Friday, Friday -> Saturday)
Please do not put out your trash/recycling/organics carts out until your adjusted service day. Public Works crews will be plowing throughout the next two days and need the roads clear of all carts and vehicles.
As a reminder: Carts should be placed in the driveway apron for collection and not in the street.

Foodie Fridays: Jams and Jellies on March 3
Next week, instructor Marty Danielson of Ms. Marty’s Sweet Shop will lead a class on jam and jelly making from start to finish, including how to safely preserve foods through the water bath canning method. The class will be held on March 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Community center (7000 Nicollet).
Students will learn about equipment, food safety, steps in the process (jellies vs jams, and the definitions), and make a batch of jam! Students will also get to sample the jam or jelly made in class, and take home an 8 oz. jar.
Marty has over 50 years of experience making and canning her own jams and jellies, and has been a Blue Ribbon winner at county fairs. She has recently been a vendor at Penn Fest in Richfield, and is a former Richfield Farmers Market vendor.

Be a battery hero!
Reminder to bring button batteries, lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries to the South Hennepin Recycling and Problem Waste Drop-Off Center (1400 West 96th St, Bloomington). These batteries CANNOT go in trash or recycling carts. Single-use AA, AAA and other alkaline batteries can be brought to the county drop-off to be recycled too. While these are safe to put in the garbage, recycling them is better for the environment because less is going to the landfill/incinerator
