Salting tips for icy weather
Amid cold winter weather, salt used to de-ice our paved surfaces is commonly over-applied. Excess salt damages our infrastructure and harms the environment. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) offers tips so residents can protect their water resources this winter with smart salting:
-
Shovel and scrape: the more snow and ice you can remove, the less salt is needed to be effective.
-
Don’t salt when the temperature is below 15°F; most salts stop working at this temperature.
-
Use the right amount; more salt does not equal more snow and ice melt. Twelve ounces of salt (size of a coffee mug) can effectively treat a 12-by-20-foot driveway or 10 sidewalk squares (about 250 square feet).
-
Sweep up salt on dry surfaces. It is no longer doing any work and will be washed away into local waters. You can keep it to use later.
