Support your community this holiday season
Two holiday giving opportunities are underway in Richfield this week, providing options for giving back to the community this holiday season!
Toys for Tots
The Police Department is leading a local campaign to collect and distribute NEW and unwrapped toys as Christmas gifts for children in the area. Collection boxes are located in the Police Department lobby (open 24 hours, 6700 Portland Ave), Public Works (1901 66th Street East) and the Community Center (7000 Nicollet Ave). Donations will be accepted through noon on December 9.
VEAP Food Drive
The entire community is invited to participate in the third annual community-wide food drive. The initiative began in 2020 and supports the efforts of Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP). VEAP operates the Twin Cities’ largest food pantry, which serves Richfield, Bloomington, Edina and Minneapolis. Municipal buildings, local businesses and residents have signed up to collect donations all around the city. Donation drop-off sites include all 4 municipal liquor stores, Wood Lake Nature Center and the Community Center. Donations will be accepted through December 15.

Bloomington Avenue road/bridge closures begin Monday
Beginning Monday December 12, Bloomington Avenue will be closed completely between Highway 62 and 62nd Street. Minneapolis Public Works and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) are working together on the project to replace two parallel and aging storm sewer pipes that drain to Taft Lake.
During the project, traffic will be impacted as follows:
-
Northbound Bloomington Avenue will be closed beginning at 62nd Street. Local access will be maintained to homes for residents.
-
Southbound Bloomington Avenue traffic coming from Minneapolis must exit onto Eastbound Highway 62 and will not be able to access Richfield from the Bloomington Avenue Bridge.
- The Bloomington Avenue exit on Eastbound Highway 62 will be closed. Detours will redirect traffic to Portland or Highway 77.
- Bicycle and pedestrian trails between Taft Lake and Bloomington Avenue will be closed while the headwall and pipes are constructed in the park.
The project is expected to take up to three weeks.
