The Richfield Recap - June 16, 2022 |
|
On June 24, come out and bike with a cop!
On Friday, June 24, from 4 - 6 p.m., all children are invited to come meet Richfield's police officers and take a short ride around the park. Officers will discuss safe riding techniques, teach riders how to do a bike safety check and assist with getting bike helmets properly fitted. All riders will be required to have a helmet to participate in the ride (some helmets will be available for those without one). Free ice cream for all participants!
Call 612-730-4046 or 612-243-3064 to register.

Celebrate Pride Month
Earlier this week, the City Council proclaimed the month of June as Pride Month in the city of Richfield.
During Pride Month we celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community members and their right to live a safe, dignified life. This month raises awareness, encourages self-love and self-affirmation, and provides increased visibility of sexual diversity and gender variance.
Work for equality continues to this day, with many members of the community and their allies working to ensure they receive equal treatment in all parts of society. Join us in promoting and celebrating Pride Month!

Updates from Wood Lake Nature Center
|
|
 Chronolog Stations
Recently, Wood Lake Nature Center installed three Chronolog stations at key locations around the park. Chronolog, a web-based information-gathering tool, is used worldwide to create a crowd-sourced record that monitors the environment and engages communities in citizen science.
Wood Lake visitors can use their cellphones to capture and email photos which contribute to a long-term, time-lapsed record of the ecosystem around Wood Lake Nature Center. This project was funded by Friends of Wood Lake (FOWL) and is a great way to engage the community while gathering data on natural areas one photo at a time.

 Wildlife Update
This week, Rabbit Rescue was able to safely capture a domestic rabbit that was dropped off at Wood Lake over the weekend. A reminder that if you have a pet you can no longer keep, please do not release them into the wild! Many pet stores will often take them back and there are many rescue groups willing to rehome reptiles, birds or mammals.
Additionally, snapping and painted turtles continue to venture out of the marsh at Wood Lake Nature Center to lay eggs in parks and yards. Please drive slowly on Lyndale Avenue and Lake Shore Drive and keep your eyes peeled for these turtles!

Come for dinner; stay to brainstorm!
The U of M's Tourism Center is helping Richfield perform a self-study to determine the city's tourism goals, and we need the Richfield community to participate!
On Tuesday, June 21, from 5 - 8 p.m., join your community members for a FREE dinner and brainstorming session at the Community Center. Boxed meals will be provided from Local Roots.
Please register, so organizers can plan for the appropriate number of people.

 Dumpster Permits Required
As we enter construction and renovation season, please remember that a permit is required when placing a dumpster or other storage device on the street. These items can only be placed on certain residential streets with a city-issued permit. Dumpsters are not allowed on streets without on-street parking, in alleys or in bike lanes. No permit is required when placing a dumpster in a private driveway or yard.
For more information, contact Richfield Public Works at 612-861-9170 or pwpermits@richfieldmn.gov.

 Only flush the three “P’s”
On Monday, Public Works had to repair Lift Station #4’s pump because it was clogged with cotton rags!
Please remember that pee, poo and toilet paper, the "three Ps," are the only things that should go down your toilet.
Items like “flushable” wipes, rags and hygienic products can block your sewer line creating sewer back-ups and damage to the city’s lift station pumps requiring costly repairs.
