1. Check out FREE electronic filing options. 
You may qualify for free electronic filing! Some software vendors offer free filing based on age or income. Go to Electronic Filing Software for Individuals.

2. Get answers to tax questions. 
Our website has targeted Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on every page of our website. Look on the right side of a page to see the Top FAQs for that topic. Click a question for the answer or click “see all” for the complete list of FAQs.

3. Get Tax Law Changes information. 
During the Minnesota Legislative Session, we post important information regarding tax law changes that affect our taxpayers. Go to our New Tax Law Changes page or click the orange “Tax Law Changes” button on our home page.

4. Check on your refund. 
The Where’s My Refund? application is a fast and easy way to check on your tax refund. You can also call 651-296-4444 (800-657-3676) to check your refund status.

5. Direct Deposit your refund. 
Direct depositing your refund in your bank account is the fastest, safest, most secure way to get it.

  • If you e-file: select the direct deposit option and enter your bank account number
  • If you paper file: put your bank account number on your tax return before filing your taxes
  • If you use a preparer: they can do it for you

6. Try Our e-Services Payment System.
If you owe taxes, pay electronically with our e-Services Payment System. It’s a safe, easy and free way to pay from your bank account. You can also pay electronically with your credit or debit card using www.payMNtax.com (Value Payment Systems LLC is a third-party vendor). Note: Value Payment Systems charges a convenience fee.

7. Requesting a Payment Agreement. 
If you owe a tax debt or a debt we are collecting for another agency, you can request a payment agreement online or by contacting us. Use the contact information in the bill you receive from us to get started. Go to Requesting a Payment Agreement for more information.

8. Get forms and instructions. 
You’ll find all our Minnesota tax forms and instructions on our website. Go to Current Year Individual Income Tax Forms or see a list of all forms and instructions.

9. Free Electronic Filing for Homeowners.
If you are a homeowner, you can file your Minnesota homeowners property tax refund for free using our Property Tax Refund Online Filing System.

10. Find a Free Tax Preparation Site. 
Qualifying taxpayers can get free help preparing their federal and state income tax returns at locations across Minnesota. You can search for a site near you using our Free Tax Preparation Site Search. You can get this free help if any of the following are true:

  • You are disabled
  • You speak limited or no English
  • Your income is $53,000 or less
