Advance Payments of the Child Tax Credit

General header

If you qualify for Minnesota’s Child Tax Credit you will now have the option to receive advance payments of your following year’s credit when you file your income tax return. Minnesota is the first state in the nation to offer this option for Child Tax Credit recipients.

If you choose the advance payments option during the upcoming filing season, you will receive:

  • Your full Child Tax Credit for the current filing year
  • Part of your following year credit in three advance payments sent in the second half of 2025
  • The remaining part of your credit when filing your next income tax return.

Interaction with SNAP

Choosing advance payments may impact Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and eligibility. Starting in January, you can use the estimator on the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families website to see if choosing advance payments will impact your SNAP benefits.

SNAP benefits and eligibility are not impacted if you claim the Child Tax Credit without advance payments.
