You may qualify for a market value exclusion program, which reduces your home's market value for tax purposes. This may reduce your property tax. (This program was formerly known as the Disabled Veteran' Homestead Property Tax Exclusion.)
Do I qualify for this exclusion?
You may qualify if all of these are true:
- You are an honorably discharged veteran
- You have a service-connected disability rating of 70% or higher
- You own and occupy a homestead property by December 1, 2021
You may also qualify if you are the surviving spouse or primary family caregiver of qualifying veterans and service members. For details, review our Market Value Exclusion for Veterans with a Disability webpage.
How do I apply?
You must:
- Work with the Veteran Service Officer (VSO) in your county and allow them access to your disability rating
- Submit an initial application to your county assessor’s office by December 15, 2021, to qualify for the exclusion for taxes payable in 2022
Once you qualify, the VSO will verify the information with your county assessor each year.
What if I move after receiving the exclusion?
You must submit a new application for your new homestead. If you moved to a different county, work with the VSO in that county.
What if I have questions?
- For questions about the exclusion, contact your county assessor’s office
- For questions about required forms for the application, speak with your county’s VSO
