You may qualify for a property tax exclusion on your homestead.

Do I qualify for this exclusion?

You may qualify if all of the following are true:

  • You are an honorably discharged veteran.
  • You have a service-connected disability rating of 70 percent or higher.
  • You own and occupy a property classified as homestead.

You may also qualify if you are the surviving spouse or primary family caregiver of qualifying veterans and service members. For details, see Property Tax Fact Sheet 11.

How do I apply?

As a veteran, you must:

  1. Work with the Veteran Service Officer (VSO) in your county to allow them access to your disability rating.
  2. Submit an initial application to your county assessor’s office by July 1.

Once you qualify, the VSO will verify the information with your county assessor each year.

What if I move after receiving the exclusion?

You must submit a new application for your new homestead. If you moved to a different county, work with the VSO in that county.

What if I have questions?

  • For questions about the exclusion, contact your county assessor’s office.
  • For questions about required forms for the application, speak with your county VSO.
