The Minnesota Department of Revenue can disclose your clients’ confidential information to you if we have power of attorney on file granting you authority.
How do I get power of attorney on file for my clients?
Do any of the following:
- Send us Form REV184, Power of Attorney. This form allows your clients to grant you full or limited authority.
- Send us federal Form 2848. This form must state “Minnesota” (or “MN”) or a Minnesota tax form number and any specific tax years.
- On the bottom of their Minnesota Return, have your clients check the box next to “I authorize the Minnesota Department of Revenue to discuss this return with my paid preparer or the third-party designee indicated on my federal return.”
How long does my power of attorney last?
If you send us either Form REV184 or federal Form 2848, your power of attorney lasts until revoked or expired. Power of attorney also expires if your client passes away.
If your clients check the box on the Minnesota return, your power of attorney expires one year from the return’s due date or one year from it’s received date, whichever is later.
How do I change or remove an existing power of attorney?
You or your client can change or cancel it. Submit Form REV184 with either the Change or Remove box checked to make changes to the existing power of attorney.
