Tour our facility to see how food scrap bags are sorted from the trash
When you throw your food scrap bags in your trash cart or dumpster, your trash hauler transports it to the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy (R&E) Center in Newport.
Ramsey and Washington counties jointly own the R&E Center and use machinery to identify and separate out food scrap bags from the trash to be turned into a nutrient-rich soil called "compost”. The rest of the trash is processed to recover other valuable materials, like certain recyclables, and fuel to produce electricity. Every year, the R&E Center manages roughly 450,000 tons of trash generated in the two counties.
R&E offers a variety of programs, like the Food Scraps Pickup Program, to help residents and businesses reduce waste and recycle better. Through R&E, the counties strive to protect health and the environment and meet the state’s 75% recycling goal.
