Infectious Waste

R&E continues to receive commercial waste containing improperly disposed of infectious waste. First and foremost, this poses significant health risks for both our and your employees.

We appreciate the cooperation of the haulers we've engaged with and request that you continue to maintain proactive communication on this matter with your medical, dental and veterinary account holders. In accordance with Minnesota regulations, all infectious waste generators must establish a site-specific infectious waste management plan, covering waste generation locations, staff training and procedures to ensure proper infectious waste management.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s fact sheet on infectious waste management offers guidance on how to handle infectious waste. Transportation and fees for proper disposal will continue to be the responsibility of the hauler. Please let us know if you have questions or require additional resources to provide to your customers.

Updated Hauler Handbook In January, we published an updated version of the R&E Center Hauler Handbook. The purpose of this handbook is to be a guide for haulers who deliver MSW to the R&E Center. Haulers may deliver MSW to other transfer stations under contract with R&E. These transfer stations may enforce guidelines or have policies or procedures that differ from those at the R&E Center. This handbook is specific to the R&E Center only. Click here to read the updated handbook.

Reminder as Spring Approaches Please remind customers: Yard waste is not accepted at the R&E Center and should not be in trash carts or dumpsters This includes grass clippings, leaves, branches and other organic debris. Ramsey and Washington County residents can utilize yard waste drop-off sites at no cost.

Food Scraps Pickup Program Unloading residential waste from Food Scraps Pickup Program eligible areas Reminder: The food scraps pickup program has been available to residents of Maplewood, Cottage Grove, Newport and North St. Paul since October 2023. All residential waste from these communities should be hauled to the R&E Facility. Once at the facility, all waste haulers servicing residential and apartment complexes in Cottage Grove, Newport, Maplewood and North St. Paul should use door "B" for unloading. Signage is in place to clearly mark the designated route.

2023 Processing Numbers Fuel produced at the R&E Center created enough electricity to power 13,450 homes for a year. 13,029 tons of ferrous and non-ferrous metals were recovered from the trash for recycling. 99,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide were prevented by not landfilling trash, the equivalent of taking 22,142 gasoline cars off the road for a year. A full annual report will be released in April 2024.

Recycling Exists Campaign Questions from residents about what happens to recycling after it leaves their homes have been increasing over the years. Ramsey and Washington counties, along with Carver, Dakota, Hennepin and Scott counties are working together to restore trust in Minnesota's recycling system with this united message: In Minnesota, recycling exists.  The campaign informs people that Minnesota is home to many recycling facilities that collect, sort, process and manufacture items made from the bottles, boxes and other containers they put in their recycling cart every day. They are assured that when they put the right items in their recycling cart, they become new products. Learn more about the campaign at RecyclingExists.com.
