Yard Waste: Not Accepted
As we welcome summer, it’s important to remind haulers that yard waste is not accepted at the R&E Center. According to Minnesota State Statute 115A.931, yard waste includes brush, stumps, grass clippings, leaves, garden debris and more. State law prohibits mixing yard waste materials with trash.

By working together, we can promote sustainable waste management practices and protect our environment during this budding spring and summer season.
Thank you for cooperating in keeping yard waste out of our facility!

Food Scraps Pickup Program has Launched!
Ramsey and Washington counties are working together to bring residents a new way to recycle food scraps from home – the food scraps pickup program! This program will allow residents to collect food scraps at home using thick compostable bags, food scrap bags, which they will put in their trash cart or dumpster for collection. The bags will be sorted from the trash at the R&E Center to be composted.
In April, the counties started testing the program with approximately 2,000 households in Cottage Grove, Maplewood, Newport and North Saint Paul. The pilot will run for about six months with a goal to begin rolling out to more households later in 2023. We appreciate your involvement in launching this program and know that you are a key touchpoint with residents.

R&E Center Facility Updates

Food Scrap Bag Sortation Building
The pilot for the food scraps pickup program is now underway, which means that food scrap bags are now arriving at the R&E Center. The food scraps pickup program uses specially designed compostable bags, called food scrap bags, which are mechanically separated using artificial intelligence technology in the new food scrap bag sortation building.

Recyclable Recovery System Commissioning
To recover more value from trash and ensure less is ending up in landfills, R&E expanded our recyclable recovery system (RRS). Commissioning of these new lines is currently underway. The new lines will separate an additional 20,000 tons of material from the waste stream to be recycled.
