July 22 Stillshot

Dear Neighbors,

I’m proud to share that the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners recently approved $18.4 million in new affordable housing investments, supporting 29 projects that will create, preserve or subsidize more than 1,400 homes across our county. This includes 200 deeply affordable units reserved for households earning less than 30% of the area median income.

These vital resources include:

  • $11.9 million from Local Affordable Housing Aid (LAHA),
  • $5.7 million from the Housing and Redevelopment Authority levy, and
  • $739,000 from State Affordable Housing Aid (SAHA).

These local investments are especially critical in the face of impending federal funding cuts to housing, Medicaid, and SNAP programs. Proposed reductions at the national level threaten the stability of low-income households who rely on these supports. Without swift federal support, families risk falling into homelessness or housing crisis.

As your commissioner and HRA Chair, I remain focused on ensuring all residents have access to safe, decent, and affordable homes. By allocating these county and state dollars now, we are working to fill the gap that will be created by uncertain federal budgets. In District 6, where rates of housing instability remain high, these projects are anchors for community strength and pathways to opportunity.

In solidarity,

Mai Chong Xiong
