Volunteer as a Recycling Ambassador

Are you interested in the environment? Do you have a passion for engaging with your community? Consider volunteering as a Recycling Ambassador!

Recycling Ambassadors encourage our community to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Volunteer training starts in the fall on Wednesday evenings and includes both in-person and virtual sessions. Topics covered in the training include food scraps recycling, climate change, environmental justice, household hazardous waste and general recycling.

Pick up school supplies for free

Saturday, Aug. 2

Pick up gently used school supplies for free! This family friendly event helps reduce waste and support students by rehoming markers, backpacks and other supplies with plenty of life left. Please do not bring donated supplies to the event on Aug. 2.

Safely dispose of sharps

Sharps—such as syringes, needles and lancets—should never be thrown in the trash. Improper disposal can damage waste processing equipment, endanger workers and pose public health risks. Instead, place used sharps in a sturdy container (like a detergent bottle) with the cap screwed on. Label it “SHARPS” and drop off at the Ramsey County Environmental Center. It’s the safest option for our community and environment!

Ask EH: How do I dispose of lawn chairs?

A: If in good, usable condition, consider reuse and donation opportunities.

Other reuse opportunities include Buy Nothing groups on Facebook, neighborhood groups and online marketplaces.

Unusable lawn chairs can be brought to a disposal company, or you can contact your trash hauler for curbside pickup options.

Tip of the month: Track your food habits

About one-third of the food put in organics recycling is leftovers or unspoiled food that could have been eaten. Join the Stop Food Waste Challenge to learn better strategies for buying food you’ll eat and eating the food you buy.

BizRecycling helps businesses, non-profits, schools, apartment buildings and institutions in Ramsey and Washington counties reduce waste and recycle better.

Radon

Radon is a naturally-occurring, radioactive gas. Two in five homes in Minnesota have high radon levels that can impact health. Ramsey County offers $2 radon tests to residents. Order a testing kit.

Recycling containers for events

Reserve free recycling and food scraps containers to reduce waste. Many cities and Saint Paul district councils lend out containers. Find a pick up location.
