I was honored to attend an event with U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who visited a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Clinic in Ramsey County to highlight the importance of the program and urge Congress to fully fund it so that participants don't lose access to benefits that help promote healthy families.
WIC helps low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children buy healthy foods as well as receive breastfeeding and nutrition education. The program has had bipartisan support for decades but faces a shortfall in funding due to increased utilization of the program, which could result in 32,000 Minnesotans losing access later this year.
I attended the National Association of Counties' annual legislative conference in Washington, DC, where I had the opportunity to participate in the Human Services and Education Policy Steering Committee, Arts and Culture Commission, and Large Urban County Caucus meetings. I was also able to meet with Biden Administration Senior Advisor Tom Perez and congressional staffers from Rep. McCollum, Senator Smith, and Senator Klobuchar's offices regarding Ramsey County priorities.
