NACo Annual Conference

Travis County

I was in Travis County, Texas last week for the National Association of Counties (NACo) Annual Conference. I attended workshops on a variety of topics, including: building the child care workforce, strengthening food systems, preventing child abuse, homelessness and housing, arts as a catalyst for change, and more.

I also got to spend time with commissioners and staff from other counties in Minnesota and across the country, and celebrate Commissioner MaryJo McGuire's swearing-in as NACo president.

I saw some beautiful traditional and contemporary Mexican, Latino, and Latino art at the Mexic-Arte Museum and enjoyed feeding the animal friends at my AirBnB (two goats and a tortoise) and exploring some of the great amenities the City of Austin has to offer.

Free Tire Removal

Tires

Waste tires can become habitat for several types of mosquitoes including the species that can transmit diseases like La Crosse encephalitis or West Nile virus. In order to reduce disease risk, the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District has enacted a waste tire recycling program to pick up and remove tires from District residents. Learn more and request a pick up here.

New Yard Waste Site Policy

Starting September 1, 2023, mechanical or hydraulic dumping trailers and dump trucks will not be allowed at Ramsey County yard waste sites - this includes both residential and commercial equipment. Dumping trailers and dump trucks pose safety and contamination concerns and are primarily used by commercial services, which are not permitted at our yard waste sites. If you have a dumping trailer or dump truck, you should use a commercial yard waste site. You can read the full policy here.
