Make your home lead safe
Lead is a toxic metal that is harmful to humans, especially children under 6 and pregnant or breastfeeding adults. Even small amounts of lead exposure can cause learning, behavioral and health problems in children. The most common source of lead exposure is the paint and dust on windows in homes built before 1978.
Ramsey County’s Healthy Homes program provides free home lead testing. Grant money is available to replace windows that pose serious lead hazards and address other lead hazards for qualifying properties. If your home was built before 1978, consider having your home tested for lead to identify potential hazards.
If you think your child has been exposed to lead, contact your child’s healthcare provider.

Ask EH: Can I recycle small plastic items?
Q: Can I recycle small plastic items, like straws and bottle caps?
A: Don’t put small items like straws, plastic utensils or loose caps in the recycling. Small items fall through the recycling facility equipment and don’t get recycled. Instead, put small plastic items in the trash.
A good rule of thumb? If the plastic item is smaller than your fist and is not labeled with a number 1, 2 or 5, it belongs in the trash.
