Ramsey County Youth Works! was honored to be showcased as a local workforce development initiative at the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce (SPACC) Annual Meeting on February 27, at the Saint Paul RiverCentre. Members of the Youth Works! Steering Committee, along with representatives from the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners and Ramsey County Workforce Innovation Board shared the goals and upcoming opportunities for engagement and partnership with many leaders from the local business community. A number of other workforce development providers were also featured, which gave Youth Works! additional opportunities to share with others who are already engaged around this work. Youth Works! wants to thank Kathleen M. Lohmar Exel and the SPACC Foundation for the invitation to be a part of this great event.

Data Deep Dive
We continue to dig into data about our community’s young people. Where are they working? Who is employing them? How much are they earning? We hope this information will help you be more observant of young people in your office or down the street.
- In Ramsey County, the unemployment rate for youth ages 16 to 19 is almost five times higher than for adults ages 45 to 55.
- It is expected that youth (ages 16 to 24) labor force participation rate will increase nearly 20% in the next 10 years.
- In the second quarter of 2019, there were nearly 13,000 food service positions available in the Twin Cities, which is the most common industry for youth workers.
Youth Works! Partner: Young Adult Public Sector Career Academy
Featured Employer: Ramsey County Economic Growth & Community Investment Service Team
On Tuesday, February 25, the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners recognized the new Young Adult Public Sector Career Academy. Through this academy, four young adults, ages 18-24, are completing internship rotations through four Ramsey County departments: Public Works, Property Management, Libraries and Parks & Recreation. Staff from these four departments spent a great deal of time crafting activities and projects customized to these young people’s interests; the interns learned about public health, land surveying, the county’s camera system, energy planning and highway maintenance.
|
They were also able to spend time with Ramsey County Attorney John Choi, County Board Chair Toni Carter and County Manager Ryan O’Connor. In addition to the rotations through the departments, the interns have received other support, including a LinkedIn course, resume and interviewing support, professional head shots and a course on “How to Apply for Government Jobs."
