After more than 100 years serving our community as a residential youth treatment center, Boys Totem Town (BTT) closed on Aug. 1. A closing celebration was held Aug. 14 and included remarks from local leaders and testimonials from former staff and clients.
Watch remarks from county leadership.
During its period of operation, BTT provided a safe, secure and healthy environment for adolescent boys age 14-18 who had been committed by the court to treatment for committing offenses and demonstrating risky behavioral concerns in the community.
A nationally-recognized years-long focus on Juvenile Detention Alternatives has reduced the number of Ramsey County youth in correctional placements 60% in the last four years. This collaborative effort has a strong focus on maintaining public safety while reducing confinement and recidivism through greater use of community alternatives such as functional family therapy and culturally-specific services. The last of six youth that were enrolled in BTT in 2019 completed the program this summer.
In partnership with the City of Saint Paul, the District 1 Community Council and other stakeholders, Ramsey County is committed to a community-based process about potential future uses of the site.
