Annual Employee Recognition Ceremony 2018

Recognizing Employee Excellence

Family, friends, and the RCSO work family joined together in late February to honor several RCSO members at the annual Employee Recognition Ceremony.

Our annual ceremony recognizes members for their exceptional performance in several categories, including saving the life of another, teamwork, law enforcement actions and accomplishments, and leadership on initiatives that benefit the agency and our communities.

Sheriff Serier, who presented the awards said, "These awards represent the best that our staff does in service to the community; they represent the great work that happens every day by the people of the RCSO."

Congratulations and thank you to our honorees: Commander Mike Hankee, Sergeants Phil Baebenroth, Suwana Kirkland, and Don Rindal, Deputies Andre Rongitsch, Jessica O'Hern, Mike Casey, Geoff Chang, Nick Hanson, Neil Iverson, Brian Luna, and Long Yang, Correctional Lieutenant Mike T. Johnson, Correctional Sergeant Brian Dorsey, Correctional Officers Marko Komendant, Alex Grundhofer, Community Affairs Officer Bob Fischer, and Civilians Bob Azure, Gloria Acosta, and Nate Krause.

Building Bridges and Opportunities

Our Ramsey County community members showed up in huge numbers on February 17th to join Sheriff Serier and Hmong community leaders in a public forum, discussing a variety of topics that are important to our community members, including diversity in hiring.

Sheriff Serier said, "It's important for all law enforcement organizations to make sure they're making their organizations accessible for people from different communities to come in and work...and not just to work there, but to thrive there. It's one thing to build a bridge and say, 'Come work for us.' It's another thing to now create opportunity ladders in our organization so now people can have a true career."

Lending Hands to Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity 2018

Not your typical day in the Deputy Academy!

Our RCSO Deputy recruits spent their day recently at two Habitat For Humanity projects in metro-area neighborhoods. Our newest members assembled shelving, painted, put up drywall, and cleared debris from the construction sites.

At least one day spent in community service has been incorporated into our Deputy Academy curriculum, making for a special opportunity to serve, connect with communities, and some good 'ol group bonding.

Engaging with Youth at Scouting Day 2018

Scouting Day 2018

Scouting Day is an annual event where Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts learn about Ramsey County public safety agencies.

In February, youth and families spent a morning of fun with our deputies and volunteers from Crime Prevention, DARE, K-9, SWAT, Dive Team, Explorers, Community Support Services, CERT, Reserves, Public Works, Emergency Management, Allina Ambulance, Lake Johanna Fire Department, Army National Guard and the Salvation Army.

Developing Leaders

Deputy Pederson MSA Award

Great work by Deputy Tony Pederson who recently wrapped up a battery of intensive coursework through the Institute for Credible Leadership Development (ICLD), which was sponsored by the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association. The coursework included such topics as conflict management, interpersonal communication, versatility skills, and organization development. Deputy Pederson is the second RCSO member to complete the rigorous ICLD coursework.

Broadcasting Out into Our Communities

CTV North Suburbs w Hill and Kirkland

Our deputies are often asked to step forward and take on challenges and roles that they may never have anticipated during the Academy ...including the role of TV personality.

Last week, Sergeant Kirkland and Deputy Hill filmed clips for the CTV North Suburbs show "North Suburban Beat," and shared some great stories about mentorship, women in law enforcement, and community policing. Look for the shows to begin airing March 26th.

(And a special thanks to our friends at the City of Falcon Heights Fire Department for the location backdrop!)

Climbing Skyscrapers for a Good Cause

Climbing 50 stories of stairs to the top of the IDS Center? It was a Saturday morning well-spent for a great cause and an unbelievable view at the top overlooking Minneapolis!

100% of Team RCSO successfully completed the stair climb (that's over 1,200 steps!) and raised $1,260 in donations to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!

Remembering Those Who Served

Lt Earl Kennicutt

IN MEMORY ~

LIEUTENANT EARL KENNICUTT

On March 2, 1988, RCSO Lieutenant Earl Kennicutt died of a heart attack while on-duty.

Lieutenant Kennicutt was a 28-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office and had been serving as a patrol operations lieutenant since 1986. He was instrumental in helping to develop the first field training operation for patrol deputies and continued to work closely with the patrol training operation for the last several years of his career.

Connecting with Local Divers

Dive Team at Midwest Dive Show

It was a rare sighting of our Dive Team members on dry land, as seen at the recent Upper Midwest Scuba and Adventure Travel Show on March 3rd!

Several of our Dive Team members spent the day connecting with the local scuba diving community, showcasing the gear we use and our team capabilities, and offering insight into the opportunities that abound at the RCSO.

Serving Through the Decades

Lupe Vasquez 30 Years of Service

Guadalupe “Lupe” Vasquez, who heads up our citizen resource center, was surprised with an impromptu recognition ceremony recently for reaching an awesome milestone – 30 years of service to Ramsey County!

Sheriff Serier presented Lupe with a Certificate of Recognition, thanked him for his 30 years of service, and said, “Your dedication to this agency is known far and wide.”

Lupe’s response to receiving this recognition was to turn around and sing the praises of his co-workers and crew! A humble man with a true heart of service.

Thank you Lupe for your dedication to our community!

Helping Out Our Wild Friends

Possum Release

One of our deputies had an encounter recently with a wild friend who was obviously unfamiliar with the concept of being an “awesome possum." Our Deputy responding to a complaint of this high-spirited possum in a Vadnais Heights retail area didn’t take it personally, though. The Deputy escorted the possum (who was less than cooperative) to a makeshift container, then safely released the possum back into a more suitable natural environment.

Receiving Thanks

Generic RCSO Squad photo

We truly appreciate the note we received from Little Canada City Council Member Tom Fischer who gave us feedback on our response to a burglary in-progress in Little Canada a few weeks ago:

"Thank you for the great work and safe outcome last night! I appreciate your prompt and professional service as you resolved a dangerous situation without incident. I also note your compassion for the victims of this crime; making arrangements to ensure the home remained secure until the homeowners could return...Please pass along my thanks to all that were involved in this call. Thanks to all for your great service!"
