New sexual violence support group starts in February
SOS Sexual Violence Services has begun a
new monthly open support group for friends, family and partners of survivors of
sexual violence. The group meets from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of
each month in Saint Paul.
For
many years, SOS has also offered a weekly support group primarily for sexual
violence survivors, but also open to family and friends. The weekly support
group is every Tuesday night, 6 – 7:30 p.m. in Saint Paul. Contact SOS at
651-266-1000 more information on either of the support group meetings.
SOS
support groups provide a safe and confidential setting for survivors to talk
with others who have been through similar experiences. Support groups are open
to non-offending adults (age 18 and older) who are rape victim/survivors,
adult victim/survivors of childhood sexual abuse and secondary victims
(family and friends of victim/survivors).
SOS
is a program of Saint Paul – Ramsey County Public Health that provides 24-hour
crisis services, information and referrals. The program also offers support and
information to individuals reporting sexual assaults or seeking medical care,
advocacy during exams while receiving medical care, and help in filing a police
report or with other legal issues. SOS counselors can also help sexual violence
survivors with safety planning involving shelter and assistance with financial
concerns. In addition to the support groups, SOS also provides one-on-one
short-term counseling.
