Super Bowl Briefing, TB screening volunteer opportunity, and winter weather tips

Join our metro region colleagues at a Super Bowl briefing this Saturday, January 13

As noted in our last newsletter, the Super Bowl is just around the corner (in some areas road closures are already in effect!).  Although Ramsey County MRC has not been formally activated, we do know that our volunteers may be requested to support activities in Minneapolis during an emergency. This is also a great chance to learn more about the big (10-day) event and to connect with your MRC colleagues from other jurisdictions.

Nick Kelley (Bloomington Public Health) and Courtney Wetternach (Hennepin County Public Health) will provide an overview of the events taking place and the ways your volunteer skills could help during an emergency.

Date: Saturday, January 13, 2018

Time: 9 to 11 a.m.

Location: Bloomington Fire Station #1. No registration necessary.

Tuberculosis 101 Training on Saturday, January 27

Tuberculosis (TB) affects one in every four people around the world. It is preventable and curable, but diagnosing TB (and treating it appropriately) takes time and resources. Join us at the Maplewood Library on January 27th to learn more about TB and how it has been affecting our home community here in Ramsey County.

Davita Petty and I will talk through the basics of TB, share information about the recent drug-resistant outbreak, and provide additional detail for volunteers who are interested in participating in upcoming screening events. This training is required for any volunteer who is interested in participating in future screening eventsCoffee and light refreshments will be served.

Date: Saturday, January 27

Time: 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Location: Maplewood Public Library (3025 Southlawn Drive, Maplewood MN 55109). To register or for more information, contact Davita Petty

Be weather aware: it's cold out there!

We've all experienced first-hand the full blast of a Minnesota winter the past few weeks. Even if you were born and raised here, this is a good time to check your winter car kit and take extra care on the roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks.

Check out Ramsey County's webpage on winter weather and lend a hand to neighbors who might need a little extra assistance with shoveling or de-icing their own walkways. It's just another way we support each other here in Ramsey County. As always, thank you for your time and your volunteer spirit!
