Register for next week's training (and more useful updates from your Medical Reserve Corps)

Reminder: POD (point of dispensing) training next Thursday

I'm looking forward to next Thursday's training! As many of you already know, during a public health emergency, Ramsey County could be asked to activate point of dispensing (POD) clinics to distribute medicines or medical supplies to the public. MRC volunteers would be a key source of assistance in operating our public "POD" sites.

Next Thursday's training will be our first opportunity to use a new anthrax protocol (developed by our colleagues at the State Department of Health) as well as an online screening tool

Last chance: volunteer at the Ramsey County Fair!

Ramsey County Emergency Management, in coordination with Ramsey County Public Health and the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office is hosting a public education booth at the county fair. We are looking for volunteers to assist with booth staffing at the fair between Wednesday July 12 and Sunday, July 16.

You will play disaster trivia games with attendees and provide information on disaster safety in a fun, casual environment.

August: National Immunization Awareness Month

You may have heard that France and Italy recently made childhood vaccinations mandatory. Vaccinations have proven themselves to be a powerful disease prevention tool, and in conjunction with National Immunization Awareness Month, the National Public Health Information Coalition has released a useful toolkit to help health practitioners and others share important information about vaccines with the clients they serve (including school-aged children, infants, and teenagers - among other populations).

Ramsey County is officially “clear” of new measles cases, thanks in large part to collaboration across faith-based communities, daycares, and health care facilities, but we really need to keep sharing good health messages with each other and the residents we serve. Speaking of, here’s a neat video produced by a local student that does a good job explaining how measles is transmitted.

Drug resistant bacteria: what can we do?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just released a new video on drug-resistant gonorrhea, which made me think - what are we doing locally to promote judicious use of antimicrobials, including antibiotics?

The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy has been working across public and private sectors to promote "antimicrobial stewardship" practices in health care settings. Take a peek at their webpage for current research, webinars, and other useful resources.

As always, it is a pleasure to share information with our volunteers! Let me know what questions or ideas you have.
