Sheriff Jack Serier Appoints Undersheriff Julie Rudie as Chief Deputy

Saint Paul, Minnesota: On Monday, January 23, 2017, Ramsey County Sheriff Jack Serier appointed Undersheriff Julie Rudie to Chief Deputy.

Julie Rudie has been a member of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office since January of 2011 and prior to this appointment served as the Undersheriff of the Administration Division, which is responsible for warrants; criminal histories; gun permits; budget and accounting; human resources and payroll; training and staff development; professional standards-internal affairs and policy; fleet management; background investigations; information technology - including research and development; and planning and analysis. In addition, Chief Deputy Rudie has been responsible for implementing the character based hiring and promotion process for the Sheriff’s Office since 2011.

As Chief Deputy, Rudie will supervise day-to-day operations of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office providing managerial and administrative direction.  With over 400 members, 200 volunteers, and an annual operating budget of approximately $56 million, the Sheriff’s Office provides state mandated services to an urban community of over 500,000 residents.

In 1990, Julie began her law enforcement career with Saint Paul Police Department. Her assignments included the Communications Center, Patrolling in the Central and Eastern Districts, and Youth Services as a D.A.R.E. instructor. Julie was then promoted and served as a Sergeant for twelve years. As a Sergeant, she supervised many different units, including the School Resource Officers (SRO) program, Training Unit Sergeant, Internal Affairs Investigator and Background Investigations Supervisor

Julie has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Law Enforcement Certification from Hibbing Area Vocational Technical College. She is also a graduate of the 280th session of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, School of Police Staff and Command, April 17, 2009.

Julie is a tribal member of the Lower Sioux Indian Community. Her husband, Jay, is a sergeant with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. Together, they have five children and eight grandchildren.
