PUC approves CenterPoint Energy’s natural gas rate case settlement
St. Paul, Minn. – On Thursday, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved a settlement in CenterPoint Energy’s natural gas rate case. Under the agreement, CenterPoint Energy’s customers will see rates increase by $60.8 million for 2024 and an incremental increase of approximately $42.7 million for 2025. CenterPoint initially proposed a $84.6 million rate increase for 2024 and a $51.8 million incremental increase for 2025. The settlement reduces the impact to ratepayers by $32.9 million.
State law allows utilities to implement temporary rate increases while a rate case is under review. As a result, a 14% interim rate increase took effect in January 2024. Since the approved settlement results in a lower increase than the interim rate, customers will receive a refund. The total refund for all CenterPoint gas customers is $8.2 million.
The settlement was reached with the participation of CenterPoint Energy, the Minnesota Department of Commerce, the Minnesota Office of the Attorney General, the Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota, LIUNA, Local 49, and the Suburban Rate Authority.
