Dear Chief Law Enforcement Officer,
On 07/24/2025 and 10/23/2025, the POST Board approved updates to the Model Policies. The policies were updated with a focus on standardizing format and terminology, and ensuring the content was current. Two Model Policies not yet updated, but expected to be updated in 2026, are the Domestic Abuse Response and Arrest policy and the Police Pursuit policy.
Per MN Rules 6700.1615, each agency must adopt policies that include identical or substantially similar provisions of the board’s model policies. Please compare your current policies with the updated model policies on our website at Model Policies / POST, then update your agency’s policies no later than June 30, 2026 to remain in compliance.
For those agencies using the Lexipol platform – we have notified Lexipol of these updates and asked that they complete their updating process no later than May 31, 2026.
Note regarding SRO policies:
During a recent review of Lexipol’s School Resource Officers (SRO) policy for MN agencies, we noted the policy does not contain certain detailed guidance found in POST’s SRO Model Policy. If your agency uses the Lexipol platform, and the content of the SRO Model Policy applies to your agency, please compare your SRO policy with POST’s model policy and make appropriate changes to your policy to ensure compliance.
