Am I a Caregiver? By Krystal Wiebusch, LSW
If you find yourself supporting a family member, friend, or neighbor with daily, weekly, or even occasional tasks, you may be an unpaid caregiver. Signs that you may be a caregiver: 1. Daily activities: Assisting with an activity of daily living (ADL), such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, and mobility. 2. Medical care management: Arranging medical appointments and organizing medications or treatments. 3. Emotional and social support: Offering emotional and social support, companionship, and love and/or taking the older adult to social gatherings or arranging visits with family and friends. 4. Financial management and mail: Helping the older person with bills, financial decisions, or other important paperwork. 5. Household chores and meal prep: Meal planning, shopping, cooking, and/or meal serving, or assisting with housekeeping tasks. 6. Transportation: Providing rides for appointments, errands, and other outings. 7. Advocacy and coordination: Working with professionals to coordinate services and care. 8. Time commitment: Dedicating a substantial portion of your day or week to responsibilities related to the older adult. 9. Emotional investment: Feeling responsible or having a strong emotional connection to the older person. 10. Living arrangements: Living with the older adult, helping to select housing, or ensuring a safe and comfortable living environment.
If you are doing any one of these tasks – even from a distance – you are a caregiver. Caregiving can be rewarding, but also very stressful and challenging. It’s essential to take care of yourself to stay strong and avoid burnout. Experienced Social Worker Krystal Wiebusch, LSW facilitates the group and is available for individual appointments to help caregivers. Contact Krystal at 952-679-0577 or k.wiebusch@seniorcommunity.org.
In addition to the ongoing caregiver support group options, check out a new class offered at the Plymouth Community Center to increase your capacity to care for a loved one(s), Building Resilience for Caregivers. Offered once a month, starting in September. Attend one, two or all three classes. Course # 36305
