Updated SRVs now on MPCA website!

The MPCA has posted updated Soil Reference Value (SRV) materials on our Cleanup guidance webpage. SRVs are a screening tool used to evaluate potential human health risks from exposure to contaminated soil. The SRV spreadsheet contains generic SRVs for the Residential/Recreational and Commercial/Industrial land use categories.  Many of the SRVs on the spreadsheet were first released in draft form in 2016; others reflect more recent updates. A column has been added to the spreadsheet to indicate the SRV revision year. The SRV Technical Support Document provides background information on how the SRVs were calculated, the default exposure assumptions used for each land use category, and suggestions on how to use the generic SRVs to evaluate potential risk from exposure to contaminated soil. The calculated generic SRVs for eight metals and two organic compounds were deemed less than typical background concentrations. In the Soil Background Threshold Value Evaluation, the MPCA evaluated selected data sets to determine a reasonable background threshold value to use in place of the calculated SRV. The ten compounds for which a background threshold value is used instead of an SRV are clearly identified in the SRV spreadsheet. The MPCA appreciates the input provided by external stakeholders on the 2016 draft SRV materials, which helped shape the final documents. If you have questions or comments about the posted materials, please contact Amy Hadiaris, Redevelopment Unit Supervisor, at amy.hadiaris@state.mn.us or Sona Psarska, Risk Assessor, at sona.psarska@state.mn.us.
