MPCA to expand electric vehicle charging network by more than 2,500 miles in Greater Minnesota

Phase 2 EV charging network expansion

As electric vehicles (EVs) proliferate on our roads, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) continues to leverage funds from the national Volkswagen settlement to build out a network of fast charging stations so EVs can travel farther across the state.

The latest project to be funded by the MPCA, announced today, will award grant funds to install up to 38 additional DC fast charging stations in Greater Minnesota, extending the existing EV highway corridor network by more than 2,500 miles.

“Minnesota has set ambitious goals for powering 20% of light-duty cars with electricity by 2030 and reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% by 2050,” said MPCA Commissioner Laura Bishop. “Funding infrastructure projects like this will help us reach our goals while supporting Minnesota’s green economy and our growing EV market.”

The funding opportunity announced today makes available more than $2.6 million to applicants who will install fast chargers 30 to 70 miles apart along seven proposed corridors. Grants are capped at 80% of total project costs, or $70,000 per fast charging station.

Learn more about this RFP in an online training session on September 15, 2020. More information, application materials, and a map of Minnesota's existing and proposed charging corridors are available on MPCA's website: EV fast charging station grants. Applications are due by 4:30 pm on November 25, 2020.
