MPCA Updates to VI BMPs!

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) released updates to the Vapor Intrusion (VI) Best Management Practices (BMPs) on April 6, 2020.  The updated documents can be found on our website at: https://www.pca.state.mn.us/waste/vapor-intrusion-best-management-practices-0

The updated VI BMP documents include Vapor investigation and mitigation decision best management practices (c-rem3-06e) and Vapor mitigation best management practices (c-rem3-06).  A summary of the main updates to these documents include:

  • Updates to the expedited action section and mitigation decision tables (c-rem3-06e).
  • Updates to the Brownfields Program section including liability assurances for VI (c-rem3-06e).
  • Clarification regarding the use of interim completed pathway evaluation to evaluate VI risk (c-rem3-06).
  • Vapor mitigation approaches for commercial, industrial, mixed-use and large multi-family residential buildings (c-rem3-06).
  • Guidance on long term operation and maintenance of mitigation systems and institutional controls (c-rem3-06).

In addition to the updated VI BMP documents above, MPCA released a document titled Parking Facilities and Vapor Intrusion Mitigation (c-rem3-06i) prepared by Braun Intertec for the MPCA.  This document is a supplement to the VI BMPs and focuses on considerations for using parking facilities as a mitigation strategy. This document can also be found at the web address provided above.

MPCA would like to thank our Vapor Intrusion Stakeholder group for all of their efforts assisting with the development of the VI BMP update documents.  A list of the VI Stakeholders can be found at: https://www.pca.state.mn.us/waste/development-commercialindustrial-vapor-intrusion-mitigation-bmps.
