The Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) has an opening for a Member At Large. Since 2008, this committee has provided important technical support and peer review to the MPCA on the product registration process for treatment and distribution media. The group typically meets every other month on the third Thursday at the MPCA office in St. Paul. If you are interested in being on the committee, please contact Barb McCarthy ( barbara.mccarthy@state.mn.us) for more information and an application, or call her at 218-302-6647. Applications will be taken until Dec. 20, 2011. Meeting notes from past meetings are available here.

By Kevin Wilkins, DLI, and Jane Seaver, MPCA
For
SSTS installer licensees who are currently required to carry both an
SSTS and a pipelayer’s bond, the MPCA and the Department of Labor and
Industry (DLI) now offer a combined $25,000 bond that covers both work
on the building sewer and the SSTS. Those with a plumbing license
or who have registered a plumbing bond with DLI were sent a letter in
November informing them of this new opportunity. The combined bond is
available from the DLI web site.
A
number of SSTS licensees are taking advantage of the cost savings
offered with this combined bond, but the application process requires some attention to details. Here are some things to remember:
• Make sure you include a copy of your pipelayer card with the application.
•
Liability insurance must be in your legal name; this would be your
personal legal name and any “doing business as” name you use under your
SSTS license.
• Make sure to use the plumbing bond form, not the plumbing contractor form.
Once the DLI
accepts your bond, they will share your bond information with the
MPCA (for this year only, the DLI will begin to share the bond
information with the MPCA on Dec. 9, 2011). To confirm the combined
bond has been accepted by the MPCA (mid-December at the earliest), look
up your information with the SSTS Licensed Business Search (see results screen below). Once
the combined bond is reflected on the search, you may cancel your SSTS
Bond and continue to work under the coverage of the combined bond. This
will save you money and reduce the amount of paperwork needed to maintain the required licenses.
You
will need to file the combined bond with DLI every two years. If you
do not have either an accepted bond on file with the DLI or the
single-purpose SSTS bond at any point during your SSTS license period,
your SSTS license will be immediately voided. Contact the DLI at
651-284-5034 or DLI.License@state.mn.us for questions about filing the
combined bond.
