MPRB Recognized for Innovation in Battling Aquatic Invasive Species

Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board

2013 Watershed Heroes Award

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) was one of seven individuals and organizations receiving a 2013 Watershed Heroes Award by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) on Thursday, October 17. The awards recognize the important role we all have in improving and protecting our water resources.

“The District strives to improve and protect water quality by working in partnership with all levels of government, businesses, non-profits and residents. This year’s award recipients exemplify the spirit of collaboration needed to provide and protect clean water in the District,” said Jim Calkins, MCWD board president. “Each of the 2013 Watershed Heroes has made significant contributions that serve as an example for others to follow.”

The MPRB along with Carver County were named as winners for the Innovation in Government Award. The MPRB was honored for its fight to protect Minneapolis lakes against aquatic invasive species (AIS). Along with partner MCWD, the MPRB has worked over the past two years to develop effective programs to prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other AIS, including participation in the task force that informed the creation of the District’s AIS management program. When faced with limited resources, the MPRB took bold action to make sure that every watercraft launched from public boat launches on the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes was inspected before entering the water. The MPRB also participated with the MCWD on development of the “Save Our Summers” AIS public outreach campaign.

In attendance to accept the award were MPRB leadership and staff members, including several AIS inspectors and Park Board Commissioner Carol Kummer.
