Ash Tree Removal at Fort Snelling Golf Course to Begin Monday

 The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) will begin removing Ash trees from the Fort Snelling Golf Club on Monday, January 14, 2013.

The trees are being removed in response to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infested ash trees found at the golf course in August 2012. Approximately 200 trees will be removed and will be reclaimed or disposed of in accordance with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s EAB guidelines. Weather permitting, removal is expected to be completed within one week.

EAB was first discovered in Minneapolis in March 2010 at Tower Hill Park. As a result, the MPRB’s Forestry Department fully activated its EAB Response Plan, which seeks to minimize the environmental, economic and aesthetic impact on the city’s urban forest. Proactive measures include removal of the infested trees and continued establishment of trap trees, surveying of ash trees, and proactive removal of ash trees that are damaged or defective.
