$2.1 million project will overhaul east side of the park
Yesterday, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc. (EPNI) hosted a groundbreaking celebration at Elliot Park. Construction has begun on a $2.1 million project dedicated to improvements on the park's east side.
The 6.5-acre park serves a downtown Minneapolis neighborhood that includes homes, businesses and major institutions such as North Central University, Hennepin Healthcare Specialty Center and Hennepin County Medical Center.
Based on its engagement with EPNI, community members and other stakeholders, MPRB developed a plan focused on activities, amenities and art for people who live, work and play in the neighborhood:
-
A central lawn and gathering space for concerts, movies and other events as well as informal events and games
-
New playground located closer to street, recreation center, parking
-
Patio and sports plaza outside the recreation center
-
Splash pad connects to patio
-
Attractive fencing and landscaping along park edges
The plan also addresses visibility and access to help improve safety. At the groundbreaking, Superintendent Al Bangoura noted that the project at Elliot Park is part of broader effort by MPRB to increase activities and events at downtown parks.
Construction Impacts
The park's east side is enclosed with fencing during construction, which will continue through fall and resume next spring. The project is planned to be complete in 2026.
Elliot Recreation Center will remain open throughout construction and continue its robust slate of programs and activities, including many for youth that are free or fully discountable. Check out current and upcoming programs.
Elliot Park's east-side athletic field and skatepark are not affected by construction.
