Increased park police presence to begin Friday at Boom Island Park following Sunday shooting
Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) Park Police officers responded to the shootings at Boom Island Park on Sunday night, June 1 2025, which left one woman dead, five men shot, and one woman injured. Park Police officers rendered first aide and provided life saving measures at the scene and are working closely with the Minneapolis Police Department, who lead investigations when park incidents involve a homicide. It is not believed that anyone involved in the incident had an MPRB picnic or event permit for the gathering. This incident does not appear to be a random shooting at this time.
The MPRB takes park safety very seriously at all 185 parks in the park system, including Boom Island Park. The July 2022 and June 1, 2025 mass shootings at Boom Island Park reflect an ongoing local and nationwide need for increased gun safety measures to reduce gun violence and the senseless loss of lives. The MPRB will continue to do its part to address safety concerns at Boom Island and all its parks, which collectively serve an estimated 32 million visits annually.
In November of 2022, the MPRB installed a gate at the entrance of Boom Island Park. In addition to Monday’s mobile camera and increased patrols at the park, the MPRB is assigning Park Police personnel at Boom Island Park from 8 pm to midnight from Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 22. This will allow the MPRB time to determine its next steps.
The MPRB will continue to assess park use and park safety at Boom Island while continuing to serve the residents and community members who have gone through the appropriate process to book the park shelters for gatherings, parties and meaningful celebrations. Since January 1, 2024, and aside from this past weekend, Boom Island Park has had almost no serious reported violent crimes other than one reported robbery of a person in October 2024. The MPRB will continue to consider other safety measures, as needed, including future closing of parking lots.
Boom Island Park is a 22.5-acre park along the Mississippi River in Northeast Minneapolis. It is part of the MPRB’s Central Riverfront Regional Park.
Community members and park visitors are encouraged to continue to call 911 for emergencies and any situation that requires immediate assistance.
