Bluff Street Park Prairie Restoration |
Bluff Street Park
Three-year process will restore native prairie at riverfront park south of downtown after it was impacted by public infrastructure work
A new project will restore the upper field at Bluff Street Park to native prairie over the next three years!
Work starts this fall. It will focus on invasive species removal, decompaction of soils, soil and seed bed preparation, seeding, and erosion control. Temporary fencing will remain in place for three growing seasons, which is necessary for new prairie plantings to establish. Please stay out of the site while this work is underway.
Over the last several years, the City of Minneapolis used Bluff Street Park to support major public infrastructure projects, which compacted soils and damaged the existing prairie. The City is funding site restoration and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) will lead the work with the help of a local native plant restoration contractor.
Prairie Habitat at Minneapolis Parks
The MPRB is working toward a park system that provides more native habitat, including prairie and oak savanna areas, and less areas of mowed turf.
Prairies and oak savannas provide habitat for a variety of wildlife. Increasing the number of plants, animals, insects, and birds provides more opportunities for urban residents to better connect with nature. This includes more environmental education opportunities to increase public knowledge of natural systems’ impacts on climate change and environmental health.
