Heat-related closures at multiple recreation centers for August 26
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) announces that due to conditions exceeding OSHA standards for indoor ventilation and temperature, all non-air-conditioned recreation centers will close by 3pm today, August 26.
These locations include:
Armatage Recreation Center Brackett Recreation Center Central Gym Recreation Center Corcoran Recreation Center Creekview Recreation Center Hiawatha School Recreation Center Keewaydin Recreation Center Kenny Neighborhood Center Lake Nokomis Community Center Linden Hills Recreation Center Logan Recreation Center Morris Recreation Center Pearl Recreation Center Peavey Recreation Center Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center Sibley Recreation Center Stewart Recreation Center Van Cleve Recreation Center Waite Recreation Center
- Note: Wading pools and exterior restrooms at recreation centers that have them remain open until 9pm.
- Recreation centers will open tomorrow for regular operating hours, Noon to 9 pm.
Recreation centers with air conditioning remain open
MPRB's 30 recreation centers WITH air conditioning will remain open for regular hours.
Heat Safety Tips
Stay Hydrated – Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you are thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and liquids containing high amounts of sugar.
Stay Informed – Check local news for extreme heat alerts and forecast.
Signs of Heat Illness – Seek medical care immediately if you or someone you know experiences symptoms of heat illness:
- Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, weak pulse, fainting, vomiting, and cool, pale, clammy skin.
- Heat stroke symptoms include body temperature of 103 F or higher, rapid and strong pulse, possible unconsciousness, and hot, dry skin.
