Mississippi Flyway Habitat |
 The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is excited to launch a new pilot project to enhance habitat connections within the Mississippi Flyway!
The project kicks off with a Habitat Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024, 2-3:45 pm. To participate, meet at the Farview Recreation Center parking lot, 621 N 29th Ave. This free event will take people on a guided walk or bike ride around the 26th Avenue North habitat corridor to help identify existing habitat areas and where new habitat should go.

Event Details

Who: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board staff and anyone interested in increasing and enhancing habitat connections to the Mississippi Flyway.
What: Join a scavenger hunt to help identify existing habitat areas and where new habitat should go within the 26th Avenue habitat corridor. This will also be an opportunity to learn more about the habitat enhancement/connectivity pilot project and other area park projects.
You can choose to go on a guided walk or bike ride around part of the habitat corridor to help identify opportunities to enhance local habitat. This is an outdoor event so please dress accordingly for the weather.
Cost: Free, but please sign up. Free bike rental also available.

Project Background
The Mississippi Flyway is a migration route between Canada and the Gulf of Mexico that follows the Mississippi River for much of the route, including through Minnesota. It's used by millions of birds each year during spring and fall migration.
The MPRB has identified 10 habitat corridors across the city connecting parks with a lot of existing land or water habitat. This pilot project will enhance connectivity within the Mississippi Flyway by linking urban neighborhood parks to the Mississippi River through habitat expansion within one of these corridors.
A joint technical and project advisory committee made up of MPRB staff, other agencies, and related community organizations developed a set of criteria to determine which corridor to prioritize. Categories included habitat and environment, equity, Green Zones, connections, and opportunities. The 26th Avenue North habitat corridor rated the highest and will be the focus area for the pilot project.
This project is funded through a grant from the Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund, recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.
