Explore Outdoors with a Naturalist

Birding with a Naturalist:

Herons at Marshall Terrace Park

Observe the curious and majestic Great Blue Herons at their nesting rookery on the Mississippi River! Watch for juveniles as they prepare to leave the nest and observe family as well as community dynamics. Learn more about these graceful yet prehistoric looking birds along the edge of the Mississippi.

Insect Eaters in Longfellow Gardens Prairie at Minnehaha Park

See why some birds flock to Minnesota for the summer. Look for eager insectivores darting above prairie flowers and grasses or swooping over the creek. We'll watch for flight maneuvers and hunting techniques while our feathered friends feast.

Summer Birding at Kroening Nature Center

Learn distinguishing characteristics of birds found in the park, including plumage, bird songs and calls, and behavior.

Mindful in Nature

Participants will be taught basic mindfulness practices, then be guided in an immersive experience in nature to practice those skills.

A Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, will guide an experience of thoughtful invitations to help you slow down and explore the world around you, followed by opportunities to share our experiences with one another.

Garden with a Naturalist

TUESDAYS each month from 11am-Noon
June 18 -  All About Herbs: explore the many types of herbs in the garden, discover their culinary uses, and learn herb drying techniques.

July 9 - Insects in the Garden: learn about various garden pests, organic ways to manage them, and the importance of other insects in the garden, such as pollinators.

August 6 - Terrific Tomatoes: learn about the history of the plant, best ways to care for them, common diseases tomatoes suffer from and how to remedy them, help with tomato chores and try a tomato snack.

Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden Tours

Join a Naturalist for a drop-in guided walk on the trails! This 45-minute tour delves into the history of oldest public wildflower garden in the United States, the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden, while also highlighting the current plants in bloom.
TUESDAYS-SUNDAYS from 11-11:45am

Summer Tree ID at Kroening Nature Center

Learn how to use a dichotomous key and identify trees by their leaves. Then walk through the park with a naturalist to learn more about the species you identify.

Drop-in Canoeing

Early evening POV from canoe on the water

 

FREE canoeing from 5-7pm. No registration, just drop by!
Explore the water with friends, family and neighbors each week Tuesdays at Powderhorn, Wednesdays at Loring, and Thursdays at Wirth Lake all summer.
