Minneapolis Winter Kite Festival at Lake Harriet is this Saturday, January 27, 12-4 pm!
2023 Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival
Lake surface is icy so consider footwear with additional traction
Free shuttle from 3033 Excelsior Blvd. is the best way to get to and from the event, aside from biking or walking
The 22nd annual Minneapolis Winter Kite Festival is at Lake Harriet this Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, 12-4 pm! Colorful kites of all shapes and sizes will fly over the frozen lake in a free and fun family festival featuring a kid’s DJ, s’mores, nature hikes and yard games.
Ice Safety
The good news is that lake ice thickness held up through the recent warmer weather, however, there is very little snow cover to provide traction like in past years' events. Much of the surface of the lake is icy and wet.
Please consider wearing ice cleats/snow grippers or boots/shoes with abrasive soles for additional traction. Waterproof or water-resistant footwear is also recommended.
Remember when you're on ice it's safest to walk like a penguin – short shuffling steps with feet shoulder-width apart while keeping your hands out of your pockets.
Shuttles and Parking
Free shuttles will run continuously between the Executive Building parking lot on the west side of Bde Maka Ska (3033 Excelsior Blvd.) and Lake Harriet on Jan. 27, 11 am-5 pm. Aside from biking or walking, this is the best way to get to and from the Minneapolis Kite Festival.
Only accessible parking is available onsite. Limited parking is also available throughout the neighborhood but expect delays navigating through the neighborhood as there will be event congestion, parking restrictions, and road closures.
Event Info
The Kite Festival is a FREE outdoor event for people of all ages and abilities. Activities are centered around the north end of Lake Harriet near the Bandshell (4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway).
Minnesota Kite Society experts will demonstrate maneuvering spectacular kites throughout the day and offer expertise to anyone interested in flying a kite. Bring your own kite or buy one at the lake – look for the East Harriet Neighborhood Association table near the Kids DJ.
The MPRB would like to thank event partners: Linden Hills Neighborhood Council and the East Harriet Neighborhood Association, and event sponsors that help make the Kite Festival a success, especially TEA2 Architects.
