Charles Rucker sworn in as Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board At-Large Commissioner
Charles Rucker, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board At Large Commissioner
On Nov. 15, 2023, Charles Rucker was sworn in as a Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) At-Large Commissioner.
Rucker will serve the remainder of the term, until Jan. 2, 2026. His seat is one of three At-Large positions representing all of Minneapolis on the nine-person Board. It was vacated by Alicia D. Crudup, who moved outside of Minneapolis and resigned effective Oct. 30, 2023.
Rucker is a lifelong resident of Minneapolis who works for the Minneapolis Fire Department. He is a long-time volunteer coach, an avid user of Minneapolis parks, and lives in the Willard-Hay neighborhood of North Minneapolis.
“I’m excited to join the MPRB Board of Commissioners. I believe the greatest opportunity for the Minneapolis Park system is resilience and growth and with a collective mindset focused on service, diversity, equity and inclusion, there will always be an opportunity to become better," said Rucker. "I believe that the current Park Board leadership is working in this manner, and I look forward to working with them.”
MPRB President Meg Forney appointed him as Vice Chair of both the Standards and Conduct Committee and Recreation Committee, as well as the MPRB representative on the Youth Coordinating Board and Neighborhood Revitalization Program Board.
Rucker was one of 54 people who applied for the vacant seat. Park Commissioners voted to appoint Rucker after multiple rounds of balloting during a public meeting on Nov. 13, 2023.
"I am so grateful for the huge interest in the vacant at-large commissioner position,” said MPRB President Meg Forney. “It serves as a reaffirmation for me about the importance of parks in people’s lives and how many people want to serve on the Board of Commissioners.”
When vacancies on the Park Board exist, the Minneapolis City Charter Section 6.3c states that the “Board, with at least six affirmative votes, may fill any vacancy in its membership.” At their Nov. 1 meeting, MPRB commissioners approved Resolution 2023-210 establishing the process and timelines to fill the vacancy.
