Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board announces heat-related closures and cancelations
Today, Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board closed 12 recreation centers and canceled some programs and events due excessive heat.
Closed or Canceled
- The following recreation centers are closed. Programs are canceled at these sites:
- Outdoor youth sports are canceled.
- Both the concert and movie scheduled tonight as part of Minneapolis Music and Movies in the Parks at Father Hennepin Bluff Park are canceled.
- Park staff will email all registered program participants through ActiveNet if a program is canceled.
Open or Still Scheduled
- Recreation centers not listed above are open until 9 pm.
- Recreation centers without central air conditioning will be monitored throughout the evening and will close if conditions exceed federal guidelines.
- All wading pools are open until 9 pm. This includes wading pools next to recreation centers that are closed due to heat.
- Jim Lupient and North Commons Water Parks and Webber Natural Swimming Pool are open until 7 pm.
- All 12 MPRB beaches are open until 10 pm.
- Outdoor adult sports and programs are on unless you are otherwise notified by program staff.
- All golf courses remain open.
- Som-Fest: Somali Music and Culture Festival is on as scheduled, 6-9 pm at Lake Harriet Bandshell.
All park buildings will open tomorrow at the regularly scheduled time.
Heat Safety Tips
Stay Hydrated – Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you are thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and liquids containing high amounts of sugar.
Stay Informed – Check local news for extreme heat alerts and forecast.
Signs of Heat Illness – Seek medical care immediately if you or someone you know experiences symptoms of heat illness:
- Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, weak pulse, fainting, vomiting, and cool, pale, clammy skin.
- Heat stroke symptoms include body temperature of 103 F or higher, rapid and strong pulse, possible unconsciousness, and hot, dry skin.
