Final Update: Minneapolis regional seal coat project

Maintenance for a smoother, more durable surface on 8.2 miles of bike trails at 8 locations this fall

On bike trails in regional parks throughout Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is wrapping up work to fill cracks and add a seal-coat layer for a smoother and more durable surface.

In all, crews worked on 8.2 miles of trail surfaces at the following locations: Cedar Lake Park, Lake of the Isles Park, Bde Maka Ska Park, Lake Nokomis Park, Victory Memorial Drive, Webber Park, and a Grand Rounds Scenic Byway trail segment at Columbia Golf Club.

This project is part of MPRB’s ongoing work to improve existing park and trail facilities and extend their life span. At most locations, the work took between two and four days, barring delays.

Latest News

Lake Nokomis and Victory Memorial Drive locations: In the last two weeks, crews have finished sealcoating and line striping.

On Victory Memorial Drive, two sections required re-striping due to problems with the painting process. Those sections were covered and re-striped with an alternate process, with results that met MPRB standards.

What to expect

Crews are slated to finish work this week, including "punch list" items such as removing barriers and cones and fixing small areas of striping.

If you encounter crews working on a trail, please remember:

  • Do not walk or ride on closed trails - follow signs for detours.

  • To cross, use designated pedestrian paths that are left open.

  • Stay clear of all construction equipment and vehicles.

Additional trail repairs

In addition to seal coating, crews are using infrared asphalt repair to fix root heaves, cracking and other deteriorated areas at Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis parks.

This repair method heats existing asphalt, adds new asphalt and rejuvenating oils, then levels and re-compacts the surface: See "before" and "after" images below. Re-using asphalt makes infrared repair more cost effective and sustainable – and not susceptible to damage from water infiltration – compared to methods that involve cutting, removing and replacing asphalt.

More repairs of this type are planned for next year!
