Clay tennis courts coming soon to Waveland Triangle

Construction starts this week on converting asphalt courts into clay surface at triangle park in Linden Hills neighborhood; courts scheduled to open this fall

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is pleased to announce construction begins this week on new clay tennis courts at Waveland Triangle!

The project will convert two existing asphalt tennis courts in poor condition at the two-acre 'Triangle Park' in Linden Hills neighborhood to clay court surfacing over the summer. The clay courts are scheduled to open in the fall.

The Waveland Triangle Clay Courts will be the only free public clay court facility in the Twin Cities metropolitan area when the project is complete. Clay surface is much softer than asphalt, creating a tennis experience that puts less stress on players' joints, allowing people to continue to play tennis as they age.

Local non-profit Minneapolis Community Clay Courts donated $120,000 toward construction of the court and will help maintain the courts through a Stewardship Agreement. An $80,000 Hennepin County Youth Sports Grant and Linden Hills Park Dedication Fees were also sources of funding for this project.

Clay courts were included in the master plan for Waveland Triangle as part of the Southwest Service Area Master Plan, a cohesive long-term plan for all Southwest Minneapolis neighborhood park properties approved by MPRB Commissioners in 2020. Waveland Triangle is located at 4310 Chowen Ave. S. It was first acquired by the MPRB in 1917 and expanded in 1923.
