Summer Jobs: Train to Work as an MPRB Lifeguard!
|
|
MPRB offers American Red Cross lifeguard certification classes in March and April
Lifeguard training: First step to a first-responder career
Working as a certified lifeguard with the aquatics team at the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) can be more than a summer job.
Did you know many firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), nurses, doctors, military service members and others in public and emergency response services began their careers as lifeguards?
Through American Red Cross certification, lifeguards earn amazing lifetime skills: CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), first aid, and AED (automated external defibrillator). In fact, lifeguards are certified first responders and can provide emergency assistance in a range of situations - both in and out of the water. MPRB lifeguards also learn about and train for Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and work as a part of a team that regularly makes life-saving interventions.

How to become a certified lifeguard
Are you at least 15 years old and a proficient swimmer? If so, you can take the next steps to becoming a certified lifeguard:
1. Pre-class skills test (swim 300 yards continuously; retrieve a submerged brick; tread water hands-free for two minutes)
2. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification class (active and passive victim rescues; CPR, first aid, and AED training)
3. Post-class final rescue skills test
